Fordoun Hotel and Spa: A Slice of Scotland in South Africa, with a Distinctive Charm.

Enveloped in a Sensory Oasis

Amongst my favorite destinations are those that possess a personal touch, where family ownership or management infuses a unique charm. Fordoun Hotel and Spa is one such gem, where all five senses are invited to revel in a five-star experience, while a sixth addition is eagerly welcomed.

Nestled in a setting of unrivaled romance, Fordoun captivates the senses at every turn. Weeping willows sway with grace, their branches cascading gently, while colossal organic artworks adorn the landscape. Ethereal azaleas bloom in striking contrast against rolling hills, and pathways lined with irises guide you through this idyllic oasis. Ancient terracotta bricks, weathered by time, conjure images of a nougat house straight out of a fairy tale—creating an enchanting atmosphere akin to its Scottish counterpart.

As you traverse the grounds, your journey unfolds amidst a symphony of flowing water. From cascading steps to Roman-bath fountains guarded by regal greyhounds, and mini-canals intertwining like a complex vascular system, the presence of water infuses the entire estate with vibrant and life-giving energy.

The gardens themselves are a treasure trove, teeming with riches that transcend mere aesthetics. Each breath is infused with the essence of nature’s abundance, a sensory feast that is thoughtfully brought indoors, pampering guests in every imaginable way.

Indulgence Knows No Bounds

Step into the Skye Bistro and prepare to be tantalized by an exquisite culinary experience, where impeccable flavors harmonize with unbridled comfort. Under the culinary mastery of Chef Jonathan Kalika and his team, the bar has been raised since my last visit.

While the menu may evolve, there are timeless favorites that continue to delight. Picture a succulent grilled beef fillet, nestled on a bed of horseradish-infused potato mash, adorned with red wine-infused tomatoes, and gratinéed to perfection with gourmet Greek “Brie” cheese. All this culinary symphony is brought together by the aromatic essence of Fordoun’s wild herb garden and a buchu jus that adds the final touch of perfection. Truly sublime.

For vegetarian enthusiasts, rest assured that a plethora of options awaits. Indulge in a wild mushroom and black summer truffle risotto, crowned with creamy local Indezi blue cheese, or savor the slow-roasted butternut and peppers that embody the essence of wholesome goodness. But let’s not overlook the starters and desserts, as they hold their own in terms of temptation. And to complement your meal, an extensive and meticulously crafted wine menu awaits, ensuring that each sip is a delightful harmony with your chosen dish.

Indeed, it’s a hedonistic haven. However, if your path leads you to a detox retreat, fear not, for Fordoun offers alternatives. Embrace a rejuvenating juice fast or savor the nourishing delights of raw, vegan cuisine—paired with ample time spent in the sanctuary of the spa, allowing your body and mind to be nurtured and revitalized.

Unleash Your Senses

Fordoun Spa envelops you in its all-encompassing embrace, where skilled therapists enhance the rejuvenation experience with their delightful touch. A remarkable transformation has taken place within the old grain silo, now a mesmerizing grotto where you can float in a pool infused with essence, serenaded by the gentle melodies of soothing music resonating through the water.

Beyond the expertise of the masseurs, Reiki and Bio-energy specialists, and aestheticians, the spa offers a host of exceptional amenities. Immerse yourself in the rasul, take a dip in the indoor swimming pool, energize your body in the gymnasium, indulge in the sauna and steam room, seek solace in the hydrotherapy room, or bask in the blissful ambiance of the couples’ treatment suite featuring a luxurious hydrotherapy bath.

A UNIQUE CONNECTION At the heart of Fordoun’s spa, and indeed the entire sanctuary, is the remarkable presence of Dr. Elliot Ndlovu—inyanga, sangoma, and ethno-botanist. With over 120 healing plant species thriving in Elliot’s garden and surrounding his consulting rooms, his profound connection to nature and healing rituals permeates Fordoun and its products.

The significance and passion that underpin his uthwasa—a transformative journey of suffering to become a traditional healer—endear this larger-than-life figure to believers and skeptics alike, including Hollywood stars and even the British Queen.

Here’s an interview I conducted with Elliot.

Keeping your body in motion is Fordoun’s director, Richard Bates, a former professional rugby player who will guide you along exhilarating mountain bike trails. Engage in invigorating spinning classes or embark on leisurely afternoon strolls. Walk along oak-lined avenues, witness waterfowl gracefully preening themselves on the shores of tranquil dams, and traverse a deeply wooded grove adorned with buzzing bee-hives, leading you to the tennis courts and outdoor pool. One can only imagine the occasional appearance of an otter or two amidst the majestic trout rising to the surface for their evening feast.

Fordoun’s Happy Hens eagerly await your arrival, dotting the vast scratch-patch field with their vibrant presence. Their warm welcome is matched only by the exquisite flavor of their eggs, truly a testament to their joyful existence.

The surrounding area offers a plethora of activities to explore, including craft and art outlets, as well as the abundant attractions of the Midlands Meander.

Indulge in these not-so-guilty pleasures, where every moment is an invitation to awaken your senses and embrace the fullness of life.

A Plethora of Possibilities

Just beyond the expansive field lies the enchanting Fordoun Farm Village, a harmonious collection of exquisite amenities designed to cater to your every need. Nestled within this idyllic setting, you will discover a tastefully designed multi-functional venue, a charming chapel, nine luxurious self-catering chalets, bountiful vegetable gardens, and even a spinning classroom—all arranged around a full-size cricket oval. While distinct from the original establishment, guests staying at the Farm Village enjoy full access to the facilities at the Hotel, and vice versa.

The Farm Village pays homage to its historical roots as part of a dairy farm dating back to the 1860s. The carefully adapted main buildings now house 22 luxurious double suites, each adorned with inviting verandas, underfloor heating, spacious bath and shower facilities, and a stylish dressing area. For those requiring wheelchair accessibility, a dedicated suite ensures comfort and convenience.

Should you have the pleasure of encountering founder John Bates during your stay, he may regale you with fascinating tales of Fordoun’s rich history, which stretches back to 1850. He might also passionately share insights into the social and environmental initiatives that Fordoun actively engages in, such as their involvement with a nearby crane sanctuary. And if you’re fortunate, he may even invite you to sample his meticulously crafted gin, a testament to Fordoun’s commitment to excellence.

Amidst this tapestry of choices, Fordoun beckons you to immerse yourself in its captivating heritage and embrace the myriad experiences that await.

A Reverie Unveiled

Retreating to your suite feels like stepping into a cherished dream, especially when you find yourself in one of the five superior mountain-facing rooms perched atop a ridge, offering sweeping vistas of the majestic Drakensberg mountains. These suites are akin to country cottages, spacious and inviting.

Every detail in your suite, from the bed to the linen and bathrobes, exudes a sense of indulgence and opulence. The room is adorned with luxurious drapes and adorned with high, pitched ceilings that create an airy and grand ambiance. On cooler nights, the crackling fire in the glass-fronted fireplace, accompanied by bedtime treats and stories, welcomes you with warmth and comfort.

As you step through the French doors, your gaze is drawn across rolling pastures to the hills, with the prominent silhouette of iNhlosane, the majestic mountain maiden, framed by the distant peaks. A secluded courtyard awaits, adorned with a table, chairs, loungers, and a soothing water feature, tempting you to relax and bask in the serenity of the day.

The thickly carpeted passage leads you to a spacious dressing room, situated opposite a charming black and white chequered bathroom. Equipped with heated towel rails, underfloor heating, dual vanity basins, and a luxurious bath and shower, the bathroom offers a delightful sanctuary. Additionally, it leads to an outdoor shower, allowing you to connect with nature in a refreshing way.

As the fresh country air invigorates your senses and awakens your sixth sense, you find yourself beautifully exhausted. The vast bed beckons, ready to envelop you in its embrace. The countryside falls into a serene hush as iNhlosane’s silhouette gracefully merges into the night.
